Cambridge Springs 1904 was a great American chess tournament, fifteen years after New York 1889. Eight European and eight American chess players participated. Tarrasch and Maróczy could not take part for professional reasons. All other top players entered the event. The main contestant was world champion Lasker. He had not played in a tournament since Paris 1900.

The Europeans and Marshall travelled first class on the ‘Pretoria’. They arrived on April 16 in New York and travelled to the health resort Cambridge Springs on April 21. They stayed in the luxurious Rider Hotel. The tournament was played from April 25 to May 19. Time limits were thirty moves in two hours and fifteen moves in one hour. Sponsors were W.D. Rider, I.L. Rice, Erie Railroad Company and subscribers to the Daily Bulletin.

Marshall won one of the greatest tournaments in the history of chess. He tried to reach the top but was crushed in matches by Tarrasch in 1905 and Lasker in 1907.

The tournament remained the only big chess event in Cambridge Springs, because the driving force Rider died in 1905. His hotel burned to the ground in 1931. Reinfeld published the tournament book in 1935.
