LENINGRAD
1960 The twenty-seventh championship was a fine tournament due to the achievements of Kortschnoj, Geller and Petrosian. The event was played in Leningrad from 26 i until 26 ii 1960. Spassky - Bronstein became immortal. Geller - Kortschnoj (0-1) in the penultimate round became the desive game. Viktor won his first championship, half-a-point ahead of Geller and Petrosian.
YEREVAN 1962 The thirtieth championship was a great tournament. Viktor commanded the event. It was played in Yerevan from 21 xi until 20 xii 1962. The playing hall had 1500 seats. It shows the enormous interest for a Soviet championship. Kortschnoj
won by 14/19 ahead of Tal and Taimanov (13½), Kholmov (13), Spassky
(12½) and Stein (11½). KIEV 1964 The thirty-second championship was an interesting tournament due to the presence of Kortschnoj, Bronstein and Tal. The event was played in Kiev from 26 xii until 26 i 1965. Bronstein made a great start. Later Kortschnoj took over. Tal was plagued by illness during the event. His encounters had to be postponed halfway the championship. Some games were played in his hotel room. Things went better after the torture by Viktor the Terrible. Tal finished with 7½/10. Kortschnoj won by a monster score of 15/19. Bronstein (13) ended before Tal (12½). The former champion Stein (12) became fourth.
