Super tournaments with Soviet participation became regular events in the mid seventies. Kavalek, assisted by the movie makers Passer and Forman, organised the "Tournament of Stars". An amount of $110,000 became available for Montreal 1979. Ten Grandmasters stayed in the Meridien Hotel and played in the Quebec Pavilion from 10 iv until 6 v. The inactive Fischer and rebellious Korchnoi were not among them. The games of the winners Karpov and Tal have been selected. Karpov was world champion at that time. Tal had a period of good health. It allowed him to play his best chess.
