Driving forces of the GrandMaster Association (GMA) were Bessel Kok and Jan Timman. They invited Lubomir Kavalek to organise World Cup tournaments. Six events took place in 1988 and 1989. Twenty-five players had the right to participate in four events. The last tournament became Skellefteċ 1989. It took place in the Swedish town from 12 viii until 3 ix. Karpov and Kasparov won the tournament. The series of Chess World Cup tournaments was won by Kasparov with a slight lead on Karpov. Their earnings were $175.000 and $142,500. Two concerts of the musical Chess concluded the event.

Kok and Kasparov had begun a controversy. As a result, the series had no follow-up and Kok did not become FIDE-President. The lack of sponsorship for chess had set in.
